Somerset County Recycling Center Accepts Chipboard

BRIDGEWATER – The Somerset County Recycling Center, located at 40 Polhemus Lane, has expanded its recycling program to incorporate chipboard.

Chipboard items include cereal, pasta, cake, cookie, cracker, tissue, detergent, gift, shoe, shirt and retail boxes; poster board; and the backing of writing pads. All plastic liners should be removed before recycling.

Residents are encouraged to recycle chipboard with corrugated cardboard and place the tied bundle next to the blue recycling bucket on scheduled collection days. Items should be placed by the curb no later than 7 a.m.

Curbside collection offers a convenient way for households to recycle a variety of materials, including steel, bimetal and aluminum cans; glass and plastic bottles (PETE 1 and HDPE 2); newspapers; junk mail; papers; and magazines.

The 2017 Somerset County Recycling Schedule, which includes information about county recycling programs, is available on the county’s Web site at www.co.somerset.nj.us/recycle.html

Recycling is beneficial for the environment because it protects habitats, saves natural resources and produces less pollution than traditional methods of waste disposal. It also is required by law in New Jersey.

Somerset County sells recycled materials to generate revenues that help offset recycling costs for taxpayers. In 2008, estimated income from the sale of recyclable materials was $4,100,000. Recycling also saves residents money by reducing landfill disposal costs. In 2008, more than 32,000 tons of waste was diverted from landfills.
